CHARTERS AND INDEPENDENT STUDY
A popular way to homeschool is to join a charter, which is a public school that supports independent study. The following charter schools and independent study programs are some of the popular schools open to Marin residents.

Heartwood Charter School is a local, teacher led, community created independent study public school. Parents/Guardians are the primary teacher for their child.  When needed, Heartwood teachers (CST) lead parents/guardians through their role as the homeschool teacher, as well as students through specific learning tasks to demonstrate mastery of each subject.  A variety of support levels are available, from fully developed curricula to lessons and units created by the parent.

Compass Charter Schools is one of California’s leading WASC-accredited virtual charter schools of choice. CCS’s home study (Options) program is its home study program for grades TK-12. Its program allows parents to be fully involved in all aspects of their child’s daily education.

Pathways Charter School is a personalized learning program that uses the model of independent study. They serve a broad range of TK-12 students who have a variety of previous educational backgrounds. Pathways offers some in-person classes at their campus in north San Rafael

NOVA Independent Study, part of Novato Unified School District, offers an alternative, flexible educational experience for students in grades 1-12, incorporating academic excellence and social/emotional support. K-6 students participate in daily, live, online instruction paired with teacher coordinated independent study and individualized support. In addition, students will have opportunities for monthly, in-person STEAM lessons and field trips with peers. 7-12 students have the option to co-enroll in Novato high schools to access electives and participate in sports.
